Few golf venues carry the geographic weight of Pebble Beach, and Poppy Hills occupies that storied ground with its own distinct identity. Opened in 1986 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., it was built for the Northern California Golf Association and remains one of the few courses in the Pebble Beach area that serves everyday members rather than resort guests. For decades it co-hosted the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am alongside Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill, earning its place in tournament rotation before being replaced by Monterey Peninsula Country Club's Shores Course in 2010. That pro-am pedigree gives the course a history most layouts can only dream about.
Jones routed the course through Del Monte Forest, where the holes wind through dense stands of Monterey pine. Unlike the oceanfront drama of Pebble Beach Golf Links a few miles away, this is woodland golf — tighter, more enclosed, with elevation changes and tree-lined corridors demanding precision over power.
Since its tournament days ended, Poppy Hills has undergone significant renovation work, with the NCGA investing in updates to modernize the layout while preserving its forested character. It remains the home course of the NCGA, making it a meaningful destination for any Northern California golfer.
