Few courses in American golf carry the weight of intention that Muirfield Village does. Jack Nicklaus and Desmond Muirhead designed it from scratch in the early 1970s, with Nicklaus drawing directly on his reverence for Augusta National and the great courses of the British Isles — including Muirfield in Scotland, where he won the 1966 Open Championship and from which the club takes its name. The result, which opened in 1974, was something genuinely rare: a tournament course built to showcase the game at its highest level before a single major championship had been awarded to it.
That showcase became the Memorial Tournament, the PGA Tour event Nicklaus founded in 1976 to honor golf's legends. Hosted annually at Muirfield Village, the Memorial has drawn the sport's best players for five decades and shaped the course's reputation as one of the premier venues in the country.
Dublin sits in the northern suburbs of Columbus, and the course occupies rolling, wooded terrain typical of central Ohio — hardly the landscape most people associate with world-class golf, which makes Muirfield Village's standing all the more striking.
