Few towns have transformed quite like Bluffton. Once a quiet backwater on the May River, it has grown into one of the Lowcountry's most active communities, sitting just inland from Hilton Head Island and the resort corridor that made this corner of South Carolina famous. The golf here exists on a spectrum — from exclusive private clubs to the kind of everyday public course that actually gets locals on the course — and Island West falls into the latter category, a welcoming option for residents and visitors who want a genuine round without the resort price tag.
The Lowcountry landscape does most of the heavy lifting in terms of atmosphere. Spanish moss, live oaks, tidal marshes, and the flat coastal terrain are part of any round played in this region, giving even a straightforward layout a sense of place that more manicured destinations struggle to manufacture.
As a public facility in Bluffton, Island West serves the working golf community — the regulars who play multiple times a week, the traveling golfers coming down from the island — keeping the game accessible where it can sometimes feel exclusive.
