Tamarina Golf Club

Few golf experiences on the island of Mauritius rival Tamarina's setting along the rugged west coast, where the Rempart and Tourelle mountains rise sharply behind the fairways and the Indian Ocean frames the horizon. Designed by renowned South African architect Peter Matkovich and opened in 2007, the course was built around the Tamarin River valley, giving it a distinctly natural, rumpled character that sets it apart from the more manicured resort layouts found elsewhere on the island. Matkovich worked carefully with the existing topography rather than against it, and the result feels genuinely rooted in its landscape.

Tamarina is widely regarded as one of Mauritius's finest courses, a reputation built on variety and visual drama. The routing moves through sugarcane fields, river crossings, and volcanic rock outcroppings, with the mountains providing a constantly shifting backdrop. Several holes demand precise shot-shaping, and the near-permanent trade winds off the coast add an unpredictable layer of difficulty that no rangefinder can fully account for.

The Tamarin area itself sits within the drier, sunnier western corridor of Mauritius — a stark contrast to the lush east — and the course's more weathered, links-influenced aesthetic suits that environment well. Access is tied to the Tamarina estate residential development, giving the club a semi-private, unhurried atmosphere that feels a world away from the island's busier tourist corridors.
