Few courses in Appalachia carry the kind of quiet prestige that Pikewood National has built since opening in 2002. Designed by Tom Fazio, it occupies a dramatic ridge-and-hollow landscape just outside Morgantown, where the terrain does much of the architectural work — fairways tumble through hardwood forests, and elevation changes that would feel theatrical elsewhere feel entirely native here. Fazio leaned into the contours rather than flattening them, producing a layout that rewards local knowledge and punishes casual play in equal measure.
Pikewood is a private club, and it wears that exclusivity without apology. Membership is limited, the property is immaculately maintained, and the overall experience is closer to a destination retreat than a regional country club. The Fazio design, the rolling West Virginia hills, and the absence of any rush combine to create something genuinely uncommon in a state not typically associated with elite private golf.
Morgantown itself is a university town — home to West Virginia University — with an energy that belies its size. Pikewood sits apart from all of that, offering members a deliberate remove from the everyday.
