Few public courses in the Chicago area have undergone a more dramatic second act than Mistwood. Originally built in the 1990s, the course was purchased by Ray Murrin and transformed through a sweeping renovation completed around 2011 — work that relocated bunkers, reshaped greens, and repositioned the course as one of the genuine public-access standouts in the western suburbs. The redesign drew comparisons to classic Midwestern parkland designs, and Mistwood quickly accumulated a following well beyond its Romeoville zip code.
The course sits in the Des Plaines River Valley corridor southwest of Chicago, where the terrain offers more movement and visual interest than the flat prairie that defines much of northeastern Illinois. Mature trees frame the layout, and the bunkering — aggressive in both volume and placement — is the design feature most players remember longest.
Mistwood plays as a legitimate test for low handicappers while remaining enjoyable for the average golfer, which is a harder balance to strike than it sounds. For a daily-fee course in this price range, the conditioning and overall presentation consistently punch above their weight.
