Few settings in American golf deliver on their name quite as literally as this one. The Ocean Course at Half Moon Bay Golf Links runs directly along the Pacific bluffs south of San Francisco, where the final holes play within feet of sheer coastal cliffs dropping to the water below. Designed by Arthur Hills and opened in 1997, it serves as the more dramatic complement to the original Links Course next door, leaning hard into elevation changes and panoramic ocean exposure that can make club selection genuinely bewildering when the wind picks up off the water.
Half Moon Bay itself sits about 28 miles south of San Francisco on the San Mateo County coast, a stretch of California that trades the Bay Area's inland heat for marine layer, cool temperatures, and the kind of moody grey skies that feel more Scottish than Californian on the wrong afternoon.
The course has hosted the PGA Tour's Championshipevent — the former Talabout.com Classic era — and remains a resort destination anchored by the Ritz-Carlton property perched at the clifftop. It rewards bold shot-making but punishes anything leaked right on those closing holes, where the Pacific is not just scenery.
