Colman sits in the heart of Moody County in eastern South Dakota, where the open prairie rolls gently across the Coteau des Prairies — the broad glacial plateau that stretches toward the Minnesota border. Golf out here exists on its own terms: wide skies, persistent wind, and a landscape shaped more by glaciers than by dramatic topography. The local courses that dot this part of the state tend to be honest, unpretentious layouts built by and for communities that take their golf seriously even when the amenities are modest.
Sunrise Ridge is an 18-hole, par-72 course serving a small rural community, which in South Dakota means something specific — a gathering place as much as a golf course, where the same faces show up Saturday after Saturday and everyone knows which way the wind really blows on the back nine.
Eastern South Dakota's golf season runs roughly May through October, bookended by late-spring cold snaps and early-fall frosts. Summers here can be warm and breezy, and the light in the evening hours, true to the course's name, is genuinely something to see.
