Rancho Viejo is a small residential community on the outskirts of Brownsville, deep in the Rio Grande Valley at the southernmost tip of Texas — about as far south as you can go on the mainland U.S. before crossing into Mexico. The climate here is subtropical, and the landscape reflects it: palm trees, dense subtropical brush, and the flat, heat-baked terrain characteristic of the Valley's border country. Golf in this region is a year-round pursuit, though summer rounds demand an early tee time and a tolerance for serious heat and humidity.
El Diablo — The Devil — carries a name that suggests the course has some bite to it. Whether that reputation is earned through length, layout, or the region's punishing conditions, the name alone sets an expectation. Courses in this corner of Texas often play firmer and faster than golfers from more temperate climates expect, and the subtropical wind off the Gulf can quietly turn a manageable card into something much uglier.
As part of the Rancho Viejo Resort, the course serves both the resort's guests and the broader Valley golf community, offering a rare destination golf experience in a region more often passed through than visited for its own sake.
