Golf des Étraches

Few golf courses in France demand as much respect from the weather as this one. Pontarlier sits at roughly 840 meters above sea level in the Doubs département, pressed against the Swiss border in the Franche-Comté region — one of the coldest, snowiest corners of the country. The Jura plateau here is a landscape of dense conifer forests, limestone meadows, and long winters, and Golf des Étraches plays very much as a product of that environment: open, exposed, and subject to conditions that can shift dramatically within a single round.

The course occupies high-altitude terrain that gives it a character distinct from the manicured resort tracks of the Alps or the Atlantic coast. Fairways tend to firm and run in summer, rewarding ground game over aerial assault, and the surrounding scenery — ridgelines, pasture, woodland edges — is genuinely striking without being theatrical about it.

Pontarlier is better known for absinthe distilling and cross-country skiing than for golf, which gives this club a pleasantly local, unselfconscious feel. It serves a community that takes its sport seriously but without pretension.
