Few golf courses in Australia demand you simply stop and look around as insistently as this one. Thredbo sits inside the Kosciuszko National Park in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, and the alpine setting does most of the heavy lifting before you've even teed off — granite boulders, snow gum woodland, and the Thredbo River winding through the valley floor. The course is short by conventional standards, a par 64 layout that plays more as a precision test than a power game, rewarding placement over distance on tightly framed holes that weave through the mountain terrain.
The village of Thredbo is best known as Australia's premier alpine ski resort, which means the course occupies a genuinely seasonal world. Summer and autumn bring wildflower meadows and cool, clear air at roughly 1,400 metres elevation, and the golf becomes a quiet counterpoint to the high-country activity all around.
For visiting players, the appeal is less about competitive challenge and more about the sheer improbability of the place — an 18-hole round played at altitude, surrounded by national park, where the scenery routinely outscores the golfer.
