Houston's flat coastal prairie doesn't naturally lend itself to dramatic golf, but Wildcat Golf Club has long been one of the city's answers to that challenge. The Highlands Course is 1 of 2 distinct 18-hole layouts on the property — the other being the Lakes Course — making Wildcat a genuine 36-hole destination on the southwest side of the city. The complex has built a reputation as a well-maintained, accessible public facility that punches above its weight for everyday Houston golfers.
The Highlands name hints at the design philosophy: manufactured elevation and contoured terrain used to create visual interest and strategic variety that the surrounding landscape doesn't naturally provide. Expect mounding, undulation, and a layout that plays differently than the flat suburban courses that dominate this part of Texas.
Houston's golf season runs essentially year-round, with the main enemies being summer heat and humidity rather than cold or frost. For locals, that means a course like this gets serious use — and courses that hold up under that kind of traffic earn real loyalty.
