Few courses on the Silver Coast make as bold a first impression as Royal Óbidos. Designed by Seve Ballesteros and opened in 2009, the layout occupies a dramatic stretch of Atlantic-facing terrain between the medieval walled town of Óbidos and the ocean, giving players a sequence of holes that shift between rolling inland terrain and exposed coastal ridgelines. The Ballesteros design signature is visible throughout — generous in spirit but demanding of precision, with greens that reward creative shot-shaping and a routing that constantly frames the surrounding landscape.
The broader region is one of Portugal's most compelling for golf. The Silver Coast (Costa de Prata) has drawn architects and resort developers for decades, and the area around Óbidos sits at its heart, about 80 kilometers north of Lisbon. The famous medieval town with its intact hilltop walls is visible from parts of the course, lending the whole experience an atmosphere that's hard to replicate.
Royal Óbidos is the centerpiece of the Bom Sucesso resort development, and it plays more like a destination layout than a casual round — open fairways that feel forgiving off the tee can give way to exacting approaches, and the wind off the Atlantic is rarely absent.
