Few golf developments in recent memory have been as controversial — or as visually dramatic — as the links that Donald Trump opened on the Aberdeenshire coast in 2012. Routed across the Menie Estate north of Aberdeen, the course was designed by Martin Hawtree across a vast system of protected sand dunes, some of the most dynamic duneland terrain in Britain. The scale of earthworks required to build it generated years of planning battles and international headlines, but the finished product drew genuine respect from many architects and critics for the raw, linksland spectacle Hawtree coaxed from the site.
The course plays along and through towering dunes with the North Sea as a near-constant presence. Wind is not an occasional factor here — it is a defining one, and a layout that plays comfortably one morning can feel ferocious by afternoon. The holes trace natural corridors, with fescue rough, pot bunkers, and ground contours doing most of the strategic work.
Aberdeen itself is Scotland's third-largest city, the historic capital of the North Sea oil industry, and sits within easy reach of a remarkable concentration of classic Scottish links — Royal Aberdeen, Murcar, Cruden Bay — making this part of the country one of the most serious golf pilgrimage destinations on the planet.
