Fort Scott sits in the southeastern corner of Kansas, where the Ozark plateau softens into rolling prairie and the landscape carries more topographic interest than most of the state. That terrain — wooded ravines, elevation change, open pasture — is exactly the kind of ground that makes a municipal course genuinely enjoyable to walk, and Woodland Hills leans into it. As a community-owned course, Woodland Hills serves the everyday golfer — the local who plays it twice a week and knows every bounce, and the passing traveler who finds a honest, unpretentious round at a fair price. Par 71 suggests a layout that swaps one par 5 for an extra short hole somewhere in the card, which often means a sharp, demanding par 3 or a drivable par 4 that adds character.
Fort Scott itself is a small city with a genuine sense of history — home to a national historic site and a regional identity rooted in the Civil War era. Playing golf here feels connected to a community rather than a resort, which is its own kind of appeal.
