Few clubs on the fringes of the Thames Valley carry quite the pedigree of Temple Golf Club, founded in 1909 and laid out across the wooded Berkshire plateau above Maidenhead by Willie Park Jr., the two-time Open Champion whose design portfolio spans both sides of the Atlantic. Park's routing works with the natural contours of the land rather than against them, threading fairways through mature woodland in a style that feels unhurried and entirely of its era — a genuine Edwardian golf course that has aged with quiet distinction.
The setting above the Thames Valley gives Temple a character that belies its accessibility. Maidenhead itself sits just west of the M25 corridor, but the course occupies higher, wooded ground that feels genuinely removed from the commuter belt below. The tree cover is dense and mature, meaning accuracy off the tee matters far more than power — which goes some way to explaining why the par of 70 plays with considerably more resistance than a first glance might suggest.
Temple is a private members' club with a welcoming reputation for societies and visiting golfers, and it carries a certain understated pride — the kind of place that doesn't need to announce itself loudly because the golf makes the case on its own.
