Few courses anywhere in the world can claim a setting as dramatic as this one. Perched on the clifftops of La Perouse, on Sydney's southern headland where Botany Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, New South Wales Golf Club occupies one of golf's genuinely great pieces of land. The course was designed by Alister MacKenzie and Eric Apperly, opened in 1928, and has long been considered among the finest layouts in the southern hemisphere. MacKenzie's fingerprints are visible throughout — in the bold, contoured greens, the routing that consistently uses the ocean horizon as a backdrop, and the way the land is never fought against but celebrated.
The stretch of holes along the cliffs is among the most visually arresting in Australian golf, with the par-3 6th drawing particular reverence for its exposure and beauty. Wind off the Pacific is not incidental here — it is the course's most persistent and unpredictable defence.
NSW has hosted numerous Australian Opens and remains a benchmark for prestige in the country's golf culture. It is a private members' club, but its reputation extends well beyond Sydney, drawing international visitors who regard it, correctly, as a bucket-list destination.
