Thomson sits at one of the more quietly dramatic stretches of the upper Mississippi River, where Illinois meets Iowa and the bluffs and bottomlands define the landscape in equal measure. Carroll County's agricultural flatlands give way near the river to something rougher and more textured — sand ridges, scrubby vegetation, and the kind of open terrain that actually lends itself to golf in ways the surrounding cornfields do not.
The name Sandburr Run suggests a course shaped by that sandy, riverside character — the kind of layout where natural ground conditions do the heavy lifting, the turf plays firm and fast, and the land itself determines the routing rather than the other way around. A par 72 over 18 holes is a complete test, and on this type of terrain, distance matters less than trajectory and ground game.
Thomson is a small river town, and Sandburr Run reads like the sort of community course that serves a wide radius of rural golfers who'd otherwise have a long drive to find a round worth playing.
