Kalkaska sits in the heart of northern Michigan's Lower Peninsula, a region that punches well above its weight in golf. The same sandy soils that made this corner of the state ideal for logging in the 19th century turned out to be equally well-suited for growing grass and draining fairways, which is a big reason so many courses took root here. Twin Birch Golf Course operates in that tradition — a northern Michigan layout where the natural landscape does a lot of the heavy lifting.
The birch and pine forest that defines this part of the state gives courses in the area an inherent character, with tree-lined corridors, rolling terrain, and a sense of seclusion that resort destinations farther west sometimes charge a premium for. Kalkaska is a working town rather than a tourist hub, which tends to shape the atmosphere on a course like this — unpretentious, community-oriented, priced for the people who live there year-round.
Northern Michigan's golf season runs roughly May through October, when the region draws visitors chasing the same clean air and quiet that made it a recreational destination long before golf arrived.
