Perched on the Cowal Peninsula along the southern shore of the Firth of Clyde, Innellan is one of those small Scottish clubs where the landscape does most of the talking. The village of Innellan sits just south of Dunoon, looking across the water toward the Ayrshire coast, and the course occupies the hillside above it — which means golfers are rewarded with sweeping views over the firth, but also challenged by the kind of uneven, wind-exposed terrain that defines golf in this corner of Argyll and Bute.
A par of 64 tells you this is a course built around short holes, almost certainly a compact layout of largely par-3s and short par-4s that rewards accuracy and course management over raw power. That format suits the terrain well — hillside courses rarely have the flat corridors needed for long, conventional par-4s, and the routing here likely makes a virtue of elevation change and natural ground contours.
Dunoon and the Cowal Peninsula are reached by ferry from Gourock, which lends the whole area a pleasantly unhurried quality. Golf here is community golf — the kind that has been played on these Scottish hillsides for well over a century, with views that no scorecard statistic could ever quite capture.
