Portumna Golf Club occupies a corner of east County Galway that most visiting golfers drive straight through on their way to the coast, which means those who stop tend to feel like they've found something genuinely their own. The town of Portumna sits at the northern tip of Lough Derg, where the Shannon widens into the largest lake on the river's long run south, and the surrounding landscape — flat bogland, ancient oak forest, and the ever-present shimmer of water — shapes everything about the atmosphere here.
The course winds through mature woodland that borders Portumna Forest Park, giving it a secluded, almost parkland sanctuary feel that's relatively rare in a part of Ireland more associated with links golf along the Atlantic seaboard. Tree-lined fairways demand accuracy off the tee, and the soft midland turf plays differently from the firm, fast conditions visitors expect further west.
This is a club-golfer's course in the best sense — a genuine community club where the game is taken seriously but the welcome is warm, and where the setting does most of the heavy lifting.
