Watersmeet sits deep in the Ottawa National Forest, right at the Wisconsin border, where the Upper Peninsula's lake country is about as remote as Michigan gets. This is old-growth north woods territory — white pine, hemlock, birch — and the golf here belongs to that landscape rather than imposing on it. Lac Vieux Desert itself is one of the region's most storied lakes, recognized as the headwaters of the Wisconsin River, and the course takes its name from that heritage.
Beyond that local identity, specific details about the course's architecture and history aren't something I can speak to with confidence, so it's worth doing a little homework before you make the trip. What is clear is that golf in this corner of the U.P. tends to be unhurried, unpretentious, and genuinely scenic — the kind of round where the surroundings matter as much as the scorecard.
For travelers, Watersmeet is cottage and fishing country, and a round here pairs naturally with the broader outdoors culture of the Northwoods. If solitude and scenery rank high on your list, the setting alone earns the drive.
