Few heathland courses in England carry the quiet prestige of Beau Desert. Laid out across the southern fringe of Cannock Chase — the ancient royal hunting forest that remains one of the Midlands' most striking landscapes — the course was designed by Herbert Fowler and opened in 1921. Fowler, who also shaped Walton Heath and Berkshire's Red Course, had a particular genius for drawing golf from heather and sand, and Beau Desert stands among his finest achievements. The routing moves through pine, silver birch, and rolling gorse-covered ground in a way that feels unhurried and inevitable rather than imposed.
The course is a genuine test despite its par 70, demanding accuracy off the tee where heather punishes anything wayward. It has quietly earned a place among England's top heathland layouts, respected by serious golfers who discover it without the fanfare surrounding more famous heathland venues to the south.
Cannock itself is an unpretentious market town, but the Chase behind it is genuinely beautiful — designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it gives Beau Desert a setting that belies the industrial Midlands surrounding it.
