Few links courses demand as much from a golfer's imagination as Pennard. Perched high on the Gower Peninsula above Three Cliffs Bay, this is one of the most dramatically sited courses in Wales — possibly in Britain — where ancient castle ruins stand beside the 3rd hole and the ground tumbles through limestone ridges, dune hollows, and gorse-choked valleys in ways that no architect could fully tame. The club traces its origins to 1896, and the course has the wild, unhurried character of a place that grew from the land rather than being imposed upon it.
Because of its exposed clifftop position, Pennard plays differently on almost every visit. Wind is not a factor here so much as a defining condition, reshaping the effective length and difficulty of holes that are already far from straightforward. The greens are fast and true, sitting on elevated plateaus that reward precise approach play and punish anything careless.
Swansea sits just a short drive to the east, but Pennard feels utterly removed from the city. The Gower Peninsula was the UK's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and playing here makes that designation easy to understand.
