PGA Aroeira 1 Golf Course

Few courses in Portugal carry the pedigree of Aroeira 1. Designed by Frank Pennink and opened in 1973, it was one of the country's earliest championship layouts and remains among its most respected — a proper test routed through a dense umbrella pine forest south of Lisbon that gives the course a sense of seclusion rarely found this close to a capital city. The Portuguese Open was held here multiple times, and the course has long been a benchmark for tournament golf on the Iberian Peninsula.

Pennink's design rewards patience and accuracy over raw power. The pines press in tightly on nearly every hole, placing a premium on driving precision, and the layout's variety — dogleg left, dogleg right, open par 5, sheltered par 3 — keeps all clubs in play across the round. It plays longer and more demanding than a first visit might suggest.

Charneca da Caparica sits in the Setúbal Peninsula, where Atlantic breezes occasionally reach inland and the sandy, well-draining soil means Aroeira 1 stays playable year-round. A companion course, Aroeira 2, shares the same pine estate, but it is this original layout that commands the reputation.
