Tom Fazio's fingerprints are all over the Sonoran Desert's most accomplished private clubs, and Mirabel is widely regarded as one of his finest Arizona achievements. Opened in 2001, the course was carved through the high desert terrain north of Scottsdale with a philosophy of minimal disturbance — native saguaro, palo verde, and ironwood left to frame virtually every hole. The result is a layout that feels discovered rather than built, with dramatic elevation changes and rugged boulder outcroppings defining the landscape as much as any bunker.
Carefree sits at roughly 2,500 feet in elevation, which gives Mirabel a slightly different character than the valley courses below — cooler, quieter, and noticeably more remote in feel despite its proximity to Scottsdale's golf corridor. The exclusive membership keeps the course in immaculate condition year-round, and playing here carries the unhurried pace that serious private clubs in the desert Southwest tend to protect fiercely.
The par-71 routing is not a concession to ease — Fazio used the asymmetry to create a more natural fit with the terrain, and the course consistently earns placement among Arizona's top-ranked layouts.
