Pat Ruddy built The European Club largely with his own hands — literally. Beginning in the late 1980s and opening in 1992, the County Wicklow links was a singular labor of love by the Irish golf writer and course designer, who acquired the land, shaped the dunes, and planted the marram grass himself over years of physical toil. The result is one of the most personal golf courses in the world: a private obsession made public, and one that has earned a place among Ireland's finest links without the backing of a major development company or a marquee architectural firm.
The course runs through substantial dune country along the Irish Sea at Brittas Bay, a stretch of coastline known for its broad sandy beach and raw Atlantic exposure. The layout actually features 20 distinct holes, giving Ruddy the freedom to vary the routing depending on conditions — a quirk that reflects his uncompromising, idiosyncratic approach to the game.
Golf Digest and other ranking bodies have consistently placed The European Club among the top courses in Ireland and the British Isles, occasionally alongside Ballybunion and Lahinch in the conversation about the country's great links experiences. It rewards shot-making and local knowledge equally.
