Par 60 courses often get dismissed as warm-up layouts, but Port Alice Golf Club earns genuine respect on its own terms — a compact, character-filled track serving one of the most remote communities on Vancouver Island's northern coast. Port Alice itself is a former pulp-mill town tucked into Neroutsos Inlet, surrounded by the kind of old-growth Douglas fir and cedar that makes even a short iron feel small. Playing here is less about distance and more about precision in a landscape that tends to dominate whatever humans build in it.
With 18 holes at par 60, the course is almost certainly built around short par 4s and a collection of par 3s, demanding shot-making and course management over raw power. In this part of British Columbia, expect lush, soft conditions through much of the year, with the Coast Mountains and inlet visible through the tree gaps — scenery that few courses anywhere on the island can match for sheer wildness.
This is community golf at its most genuine: a club that exists because people who live far from everywhere decided the game was worth maintaining. That's the kind of place that tends to produce loyal members and a warm reception for anyone who makes the drive up Highway 30 to find it.
