Perched on the cliffs above Plymouth Sound, Staddon Heights is one of the more dramatically situated golf courses in the southwest of England. The layout occupies elevated ground on the Staddon peninsula, and on a clear day the views stretch across the Sound toward Cornwall, with the breakwater, Drake's Island, and the open sea all visible from multiple points on the course. That scenery is genuinely spectacular — though the wind that delivers it can turn a straightforward round into something considerably more demanding.
Plymouth itself has deep maritime and military history, and the course sits within that landscape rather than apart from it. The surrounding area is part of the South Hams coastal fringe, where the moorland edge of Dartmoor meets the Channel coast, giving the terrain an open, exposed character that defines how the course plays. Turf tends to run firm, and the ball moves with the breeze in ways a handicap alone won't prepare you for.
For visitors, Staddon Heights offers the kind of experience that southwest England does particularly well — honest, windswept coastal golf where the setting does as much work as the architecture, and where the walk itself is worth the trip regardless of what you shoot.
