Golf de Ploemeur Océan

Few courses on the Brittany coast announce themselves quite like Ploemeur Océan. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1990, it occupies a dramatic stretch of the Morbihan coastline in southern Brittany, where the fairways run across windswept heathland and the Atlantic is rarely out of sight. It has earned a consistent place among the top-ranked courses in France, regularly appearing in national top-10 lists — a reputation that draws serious golfers from across Europe to what is otherwise a quiet corner of the Breton coast.

The design leans into the elemental conditions rather than fighting them. Ocean breezes are a constant factor, turning a straightforward-looking card into something considerably more demanding depending on the day, and the routing makes strong use of the natural contours of the terrain. Several holes play along or toward the cliff edges, giving the round a memorable drama that statistics alone won't convey.

Ploemeur itself sits just south of Lorient, a working port city with deep maritime history. The surrounding landscape — granite outcrops, gorse, wild coastline — is classically Breton, and the course feels entirely of its place.
