Hillandale Golf Course

Durham's municipal golf tradition runs deep, and Hillandale is at the center of it. One of North Carolina's oldest public courses, it dates to the 1940s and carries the kind of unhurried, unpretentious character that municipal layouts at their best tend to develop over decades of community use. The course was designed by George Cobb, a Carolinas architect whose work shaped public golf across the Southeast, and the routing makes thoughtful use of rolling Piedmont terrain — wooded corridors, modest elevation changes, and holes that reward local knowledge over raw power.

Durham sits in the heart of the Research Triangle, and the surrounding landscape is classic North Carolina Piedmont: hardwood forests, red clay soil, and four genuine seasons that keep the course interesting year-round. Spring and fall are particularly fine times to play here, when the tree canopy is at its most dramatic.
