Military golf has a character all its own, and Veterans Memorial Golf Course at Great Lakes carries that identity in its very name. Great Lakes Naval Station — one of the largest and most storied naval installations in the United States — forms the backdrop here, and playing a round means stepping into a world that operates on its own rhythms, separate from the civilian courses of greater Chicagoland. Courses on active military bases exist to serve the men and women stationed there, and that mission shapes everything from the atmosphere to the pricing.
Great Lakes sits on the western shore of Lake Michigan, just north of Chicago in Lake County. The terrain across this part of Illinois is characteristically flat, shaped by glacial activity, and the region's weather is genuinely four-season — Lake Michigan moderates temperatures somewhat, but also feeds the area's notorious wind, which can turn any par 72 into a very different examination depending on the day.
Access to military courses typically requires a connection to the armed forces, whether active duty, retired, or dependent, making this a place that rewards its community rather than the general public.
