Few golf experiences capture the duality of Scottsdale quite like Legend Trail — a daily-fee public course in the northern reaches of the city where the desert asserts itself as both hazard and spectacle. Designed by Rees Jones and opened in 1995, the layout winds through the high Sonoran Desert alongside the McDowell Mountains, where saguaro cactus, rocky outcroppings, and native desert scrub define the rough boundaries of every hole. Jones leaned into the terrain rather than fighting it, producing a course that rewards accuracy and local knowledge over raw power.
The North Scottsdale corridor that Legend Trail calls home has become one of the most competitive concentrations of public golf in the American Southwest, with courses ranging from budget-friendly to bucket-list. Legend Trail holds its own in that company, offering a genuine desert encounter without the resort price tag — a detail that has earned it a loyal following among residents and visiting players alike.
Conditions here are shaped by Scottsdale's famous 300-plus days of sunshine annually, which keeps the course playable year-round but demands real respect for summer heat. Morning tee times are a near-necessity from May through September.
