Few American clubs carry a sense of occasion quite like San Francisco Golf Club — one of the oldest and most quietly revered private institutions in the country. Perched on the city's southwestern edge, the course occupies a stretch of land where the marine layer rolls in off the Pacific with reliable indifference, cooling rounds in summer and softening the light into something almost cinematic. This is golf played in a distinct microclimate, where a calm morning can turn blustery by the back nine.
The Tillinghast routing is the thing. A.W. Tillinghast came here in 1915 and produced what many serious students of golf architecture consider his most underrated masterpiece — a course of exceptional subtlety, where the green complexes reward imagination over power and the land is used with the kind of restraint that only looks effortless in retrospect. At 6,808 yards from the tips, it is not long by modern standards, but the 73.6 rating and 133 slope make clear that scoring is earned rather than given.
Par is set at 71, which means par itself is a genuine achievement for the average visitor — though visitors, in the traditional sense, are rare. Membership here runs deep, and the club wears its exclusivity without advertisement. This is old San Francisco, preserved in turf and tradition.
