Few American golf clubs carry a setting as singular as this one. Tuxedo Park is a gated, forested enclave in the Ramapo Mountains of Orange County, roughly 40 miles northwest of Manhattan — a private community that has existed largely apart from the outside world since the 1880s, when financier Pierre Lorillard IV developed it as a retreat for New York society. The Tuxedo Club sits within that same rarefied landscape, where rocky ridgelines, hardwood forest, and the Ramapo River valley shape everything around it.
The terrain here is decidedly un-parkland, with the kind of natural elevation and glacially sculpted ground that turns a round into something genuinely varied. A par of 71 rather than the standard 72 is a small but telling detail — it suggests a layout that earns its difficulty through angles and terrain rather than sheer length.
As a private members' club embedded in one of the most architecturally and historically distinctive communities in the Northeast, the Tuxedo Club offers something that goes well beyond golf: a sense of complete remove from ordinary life, in a setting that has changed remarkably little in over a century.
