Few golf experiences on the California coast carry the theatrical weight of Spanish Bay. Opened in 1987 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Watson, and the late Sandy Tatum, the course was built with a singular ambition: to bring the spirit of Scottish links golf to the Monterey Peninsula. The collaboration worked. Sand dunes shaped by hand, native ice plant, and fescue-covered blowouts give the layout a rawness that stands apart from its neighbor down the road — even as both share the same dramatic stretch of coastline along Pebble Beach's 17-Mile Drive.
The course plays along and through the dunes bordering the Pacific, where afternoon winds off Monterey Bay can turn a manageable card into something humbling in a matter of holes. It is part of the Pebble Beach Resorts family, meaning a round here connects to one of American golf's most storied addresses — and at dusk, a bagpiper walks the 18th fairway, a tradition that borders on the unforgettable.
Spanish Bay lacks the championship pedigree of Pebble Beach Golf Links, but many who play both come away preferring its texture and temperament. There is a wildness to it — controlled, yes, but genuinely windswept — that feels earned rather than designed. For anyone drawn to the links tradition, it delivers the real thing, just with a California sunset behind it.
