Baltimore's oldest public golf course, Clifton Park has been a cornerstone of the city's municipal golf system since it opened in 1915. The layout occupies the grounds of Clifton, the historic country estate of Johns Hopkins — the financier and philanthropist whose name graces the renowned university just a few miles away. That heritage gives the course an unusually storied backdrop, with the 19th-century Italianate mansion still standing on the property and reminding players they're walking land with a life well before golf arrived.
The course plays through rolling, wooded terrain characteristic of Baltimore's Piedmont edge, where mature trees frame fairways and create genuine strategic demand even on a layout that doesn't overwhelm with length. It has long served as a proving ground for city golfers, and its place in Baltimore's African American golf history is significant — Clifton was among the earliest public courses accessible to Black golfers in the region during the era of segregation.
As a Baltimore City-operated facility, Clifton Park is priced for everyday play and draws a loyal, multigenerational crowd from the surrounding neighborhoods. It's the kind of municipal course that measures itself not in prestige rankings but in rounds played and communities served.
