Madison's public golf infrastructure runs deep, and Yahara Hills has long been one of its cornerstones. Operated by the City of Madison, this 18-hole municipal sits on the east side of town near the Yahara River corridor — a stretch of isthmus lakes and wetlands that defines much of the city's outdoor character. The course takes its name from that waterway, and the low, open terrain shaped by glacial activity gives the layout a distinctly midwestern feel: wide skies, grassy expanses, and the kind of honest ground game that rewards patience over power.
As a city-owned facility, Yahara Hills serves the full spectrum of Madison golfers — beginners finding their footing, regulars grinding out their handicaps, and everyone in between. That democratic tradition is baked into its identity. It's a place where the game stays accessible without pretension.
Madison itself is a strong golf town, bolstered by a large university population and a civic culture that invests in its parks and recreation amenities. Yahara Hills fits squarely within that ethic — a workhorse public layout that keeps the game open to the city it belongs to.
