Few golf settings on the continent carry the institutional weight of Railway Golf Club, one of Nairobi's oldest and most storied layouts. Founded in the early colonial era and tied directly to the history of the Uganda Railway — the ambitious and controversial British engineering project that effectively built Nairobi into existence — the club is woven into the city's founding fabric. It has long served as a democratic, accessible counterpoint to the more exclusive Muthaiga Golf Club across town, drawing a broad and enthusiastic membership that reflects modern Nairobi's energy.
The course sits on relatively flat ground in the Parklands area, a mature, tree-lined layout where shade and greenery offer relief from the equatorial sun. Playing at roughly 5,500 feet above sea level, the thin air gives the ball noticeably more carry than golfers from sea-level courses expect — a pleasant adjustment that makes the course play shorter than it looks on paper.
For visitors, Railway offers something rare: a genuinely local Nairobi golf experience, unpretentious and sociable, where the 19th hole conversation matters as much as the round itself.
