Few places in golf carry the weight that Dornoch does. The Royal Dornoch Championship Course is one of the oldest and most celebrated links in the world, its origins traceable to 1616, though the land along the Dornoch Firth had been played over long before that. Old Tom Morris shaped the layout in 1877, and later refinements by John Sutherland and, in the 20th century, Donald Ross — who learned his craft here before emigrating to America — helped produce a course that influenced links design on two continents. Tom Watson has called it his favorite course in the world, and it consistently ranks among the top 10 layouts anywhere on the planet.
The course sits on elevated linksland above the town, with panoramic views across the firth and a naturalness to the terrain that feels untouched. The famous 14th, "Foxy," is widely regarded as one of the finest holes in golf — no bunkers, just pure ground and guile.
Dornoch itself is a small, unhurried cathedral town in the far north of Scotland, requiring genuine commitment to reach. That remoteness is part of the experience. This is golf stripped of pretension and returned to its essentials.
