DeKalb sits in the heart of the Illinois prairie, about 65 miles west of Chicago in Kane and DeKalb counties — flat, open farm country where the Fox River corridor and its tributaries carve some of the only meaningful terrain changes in the region. River Heights sits within that tradition of practical, working-class Midwestern golf: a municipal layout built to serve a community rather than impress a destination traveler.
Northern Illinois municipals like this one tend to be honest, unpretentious tracks where the game gets played on its own terms. The land around DeKalb is largely agricultural, so any course here likely makes the most of whatever natural contour exists near water, with turf conditions shaped by the region's cold winters, humid summers, and clay-heavy soils. Spring and fall can be particularly rewarding times to play, when the prairie light is sharp and the crowds thin.
For local golfers, a well-run municipal is the backbone of a golf community — accessible, affordable, and familiar in the best sense. River Heights appears to fill that role for DeKalb.
