Few public courses in the Metro East region of Illinois have built the kind of word-of-mouth reputation that Annbriar has. Designed by Michael Hurdzan and opened in 1993, the course carved its way through the rolling, wooded terrain of Monroe County in southwestern Illinois and quickly earned recognition as one of the stronger public-access layouts in the St. Louis area. Golf Digest placed it among Illinois' best public courses not long after it opened, a nod to how well Hurdzan worked with the natural contours of the land rather than against them.
The site itself does a lot of the work. The terrain rises and falls through stands of mature hardwoods, and the routing makes strong use of elevation change — something you don't always find this side of the Mississippi. Fairways tend to funnel and tilt in ways that reward a shaped shot, and the greens have enough movement to keep approach play honest without tipping into gimmickry.
Waterloo sits about 25 miles south of St. Louis, drawing steady traffic from Missouri golfers willing to cross the river for a course that plays more like a destination layout than a typical daily-fee stop. That drive is almost always considered worthwhile.
