Few American golf towns carry the bragging rights that Palmer does. Situated in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley about 45 miles northeast of Anchorage, Palmer sits in one of Alaska's most productive agricultural corridors — a broad, glacier-carved valley framed by the Chugach and Talkeetna mountain ranges. The Matanuska River winds nearby, and on a clear day the views toward Pioneer Peak are the kind that make golfers stop mid-backswing. Alaska's long summer days mean tee times well into the evening, with rounds played under light that barely dims.
Palmer Golf Course is the Mat-Su Valley's primary public layout, a full 18-hole, par-72 track that serves as the hub of a regional golf community far more active than outsiders tend to expect. Summer temperatures in the valley can push comfortably into the 70s, and the short but intense growing season produces surprisingly lush fairways.
Alaska golf carries its own quiet culture — unhurried, scenery-forward, and genuinely welcoming to visitors. Palmer GC is where the valley's golfers gather, and simply being on the course, surrounded by that mountain panorama, earns its place as an experience worth traveling for.
