Few settings in Irish golf match the drama of Glasson's position on the eastern shore of Lough Ree, the great lake that stretches north from Athlone along the River Shannon corridor. Designed by Christy O'Connor Jr. and opened in 1993, the course was carved through mature woodland and along the lakeshore on the Glasson estate in County Westmeath, and the views across the water toward the Roscommon hills are as striking as anything the midlands has to offer. O'Connor Jr. brought his signature feel for terrain and strategic variety to a site that could easily have been overwhelmed by its own scenery.
The course plays across rolling, wooded ground with several holes running directly along the Lough Ree shoreline, where wind off the water can completely reframe the challenge on any given day. It is not a brutal examination by modern resort standards, but it rewards accurate shot-making and punishes those who take the scenery for granted.
Athlone sits almost exactly at the geographic center of Ireland, which gives Glasson a genuinely away-from-it-all quality without being remote. The hotel and country club setup has made it a popular short-break destination, and the combination of lakeside walking, solid midlands hospitality, and a course that improves with every visit keeps it well-regarded on the Irish resort circuit.
