Puketitiri Golf Course

Hawke's Bay sits on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, a region better known for its art deco architecture, prolific wine country, and long sun-drenched summers than for championship golf. Napier itself was famously rebuilt in the art deco style following the devastating 1931 earthquake, giving the city a character unlike anywhere else in the country. Golf here is pleasantly unhurried, with a handful of clubs serving a community that takes its sport seriously without the pretension of a resort scene.

Puketitiri is a rural community roughly 50 kilometres northwest of Napier, up into the hill country where the landscape shifts from coastal flatlands to rolling pastoral terrain — the kind of open, wind-exposed New Zealand countryside where sheep outnumber golfers by a considerable margin. A course in this setting almost certainly plays across that undulating farmland, where elevation changes and the prevailing breeze will do more to test a round than raw yardage ever could.

This is genuine country golf: no frills, strong community ties, and the sort of honest layout where local knowledge matters and the scenery does a lot of the heavy lifting.
