Golf d'Étretat

Few golf courses in the world can claim a backdrop as dramatic as the one here. Golf d'Étretat sits atop the chalk cliffs of the Alabaster Coast, with the Atlantic horizon to one side and the iconic natural arches of Étretat's shoreline below. The course opened in 1908, making it one of Normandy's oldest, and it occupies a plateau where the turf is firm, wind is a near-constant force, and the landscape itself becomes the primary hazard.

The design follows the natural roll of the clifftop terrain in a style that owes more to links golf than anything manicured or manufactured. Fairways track along the edge of the escarpment, and several holes play directly toward the sea, demanding both shot-making and nerve. The views are extraordinary, but they have a way of arriving at exactly the wrong moment — just as you're trying to hold a mid-iron into the wind.

Étretat the town is a small, painterly place that attracted Monet and Maupassant, and the course carries something of that same aesthetic gravity. For visiting golfers, this is as much a pilgrimage to a landscape as it is a round of golf.
