Few clubs in American golf carry the prestige of Point O'Woods. Founded in 1958 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course sits on land that rolls dramatically through the hardwood forests of southwest Michigan, and it has long been considered one of the finest private layouts in the Midwest. It is perhaps best known as the longtime home of the Western Amateur, one of the oldest and most respected amateur championships in the country — a tournament that has sent dozens of players on to distinguished professional careers.
The Benton Harbor area sits along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, where the moderating influence of the Great Lake stretches the growing season and produces the same fruit-belt conditions that have made this corner of Michigan a destination for both orchards and golf courses. The terrain is naturally wooded and gently contoured, and Jones used every bit of it.
For serious amateurs and students of classic American course design, Point O'Woods occupies a category of its own — a club that has earned its reputation through decades of championship golf rather than marketing.
