Few private clubs in the New York metropolitan area carry quite the mystique of New York Country Club. Founded in the late 19th century and ultimately settling in Rockland County's New Hempstead, the club has long served as a refuge for serious golfers seeking distance from the city's noise without straying far from its orbit. The layout was substantially reimagined by Tom Doak in the 1990s, and his characteristic minimalist touch — ground-hugging contours, naturalistic bunkering, greens that reward careful reading over brute force — transformed the property into one of the region's most respected and talked-about private tests.
Rockland County sits just across the Tappan Zee from Westchester, in a landscape of modest hills and mature hardwood forest that turns spectacular in autumn. New Hempstead itself is quiet and residential, which suits a club that has always valued discretion.
