Few golf courses in England share their address with a working Benedictine monastery, but Ampleforth sits on the grounds of Ampleforth Abbey and its famous Catholic boarding school in the Howardian Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North Yorkshire. The setting alone is remarkable — rolling, wooded valley terrain that has little in common with the moorland and links courses that dominate Yorkshire's golfing identity.
A par 68 on a course of this type almost certainly reflects the terrain and the design priorities of a school and monastic community rather than a commercial facility, and the layout almost certainly leans heavily on short par 4s and a limited number of par 5s.
