Golf de Layos

Few golf courses in Castilla-La Mancha occupy quite as dramatic a setting as Golf de Layos, a layout that sits on the rugged, sun-baked plateau southwest of Toledo. Designed by José María Olazábal and opened in 1999, it was one of the Spanish Ryder Cup legend's earliest forays into course design, and the terrain he had to work with — rolling mesa land, ancient olive groves, and the kind of harsh Castilian scrub that punishes wayward shots — gave him plenty to shape. The result is a course with real teeth and a strong visual identity, where the natural landscape is as much a hazard as any bunker.

Toledo itself, just 15 kilometres to the north, is one of Spain's most storied cities — a UNESCO World Heritage site whose history stretches across Roman, Moorish, and Christian eras. That sense of deep historical weight carries into the countryside around Layos.

The course draws a mix of local members and visiting golfers making Toledo a base, and it plays firm and fast through the long Castilian summer, demanding accuracy over brute force.
